Chapter 4 – Zoe

I was smiling as Alan and I were walking back to my car. And I hadn’t smiled like this since I’d returned to Castle Falls. But then my smile suddenly turned into a half-frown though.

How could I have felt like this if I was constantly reminded of my failure?

I shook my head.

Happy thoughts, I whispered to myself.

I wanted to keep this happy memory for as long as I could.

As we got inside the car, I glanced at my brother. He was smiling from ear to ear, too. Why? Did he get a good grade on something? Or maybe he’d had fun playing at recess today.

I looked at him and raised an eyebrow. But he wouldn’t stop giggling. I rolled my eyes and started the car. We weren’t even fully out of the school’s parking lot when he burst into laughter.

“What’s so funny?” I couldn’t resist asking him.

I also wanted to add that he was making it harder for me to focus on driving, but I didn’t because then he might never let me drive him again and I’d have no excuse to get out of the house without risking my mother’s stern gaze and cruel lectures.

I glanced at him through the rearview mirror, and he merely raised an eyebrow but continued laughing.

“Seriously, Alan. Cut it out. Am I the joke? Am I wearing my shirt backwards?”

I panicked because I had just been with his teacher, who was such a handsome older guy that he’d had me smiling more than ever, and it had turned out I might have been wearing my top wrong?!

But instead of answering, Alan just kept on laughing.

“Alan. Come on. What is it?”

I was once again passing the intersection, and now that Alan was with me, the gravitational pull to leave Castle Falls was weaker. I sighed.

I had to let go of the thought of skipping town for the moment because Alan was still bugging me with his snickers. And because his hot teacher lived here and now the fact that I got to leave the house wasn’t the only reason I wanted to keep picking Alan up from school!

“You know what? Next time, I’ll just make you walk home. You’re old enough to start doing that.”

Despite Mom always babying him, I thought, but didn’t say that part out loud.

“Or better yet,” I said, now that I’d thought of it, “I’ll send Mom to get you like usual.”

That did the trick because he turned the snickers into a grin and finally decided to tell me what he’d been laughing at.

“I saw how you were looking at Mr. Anderson. You have a crush on him.”

What’s so funny about that? I thought, but I could also feel the heat on my cheeks.

“I was right. You liiiiiiiike him,” he declared triumphantly. “Zoe and Mr. Anderson sitting in a tree. K-I-S-S-I-N-G.”

Alan began making smooching sounds, and I knew he wouldn’t stop unless I changed the subject.

“Why weren’t you playing soccer with your friends?” I asked him.

My little brother suddenly stopped his goofy teasing, and I noticed that his face turned sour.
